About UsPaper or Plastik Cafe was founded in 2010 by our family of artists: husband-and-wife design team Anya & Yasha Michelson alongside daughter, Marina, a filmmaker and actor. Our mission is sustain our customers not only with quality food and drink, but also with culture and community all under one roof. We renovated our mid-century building to highlight its intrinsic character: exposed high-beam wooden ceilings, stunning woodwork, and gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows that are unrivaled in Mid-City.
Coffee CultureOur coffee program is rooted in the third wave coffee ethos which strives to produce high-quality made-to-order coffee. All stages of production, from growing, harvesting, and processing, to roasting and brewing are carefully curated. Our offerings include house-roasted single origin beans, as well as a rotating selection from the country's best roasters, include Black Oak Roasters, Coava, and Elm Roasters.
Food ProgramOur food program strives to honor the diversity of Los Angeles as well as our family's international background with a well-rounded, eclectic menu. We serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a selection of pastries and weekly specials that reflect the seasonality of California's abundant produce. Our menu emphasizes local products and purveyors, like produce from Coleman Farms, Kong Thao's Family Farm, and Koda Farms, Grist and Toll milled flours for handmade pastas, and Standings Butchery meats. To complement our made-in-house menu, we work with excellent local bakeries, including Cake Monkey, Ludivine Bakery, and Bread Lounge.
Beer ProgramLong a local landmark for signature coffee drinks and great food, Paper or Plastik Cafe also boasts a rotating selection of nearly two-dozen craft beers, all carefully selected from premiere California brewers. Our menu features both on tap and bottled beers from up and down the coast that can't be found in most other LA venues. Our variety and commitment to seeking out exciting, new breweries sets us apart. With our chef-driven evening menu focused on beer bite pairings like homemade pretzels and spicy black tofu, along with seasonal kitchen specials, Paper or Plastik Cafe stays alive late into the evening as a vibrant place to discover great craft beer.
Chef Matt Wilson & Sous Chef Brandon ConawayThe cafe's kitchen is spearheaded by the radically talented Chef Matt Wilson, formerly of Son of Gun, SQIRL, Wild @ Canele, and Bouchon Vegas. Wilson is a SoCal native who's first kitchen was cooking at the West Covina country club. He’s steering the ship alongside his Sous Chef, Brandon Conaway, who formerly worked with Wilson at Rossoblu and Mozza. Conaway is also a SoCal native, born and raised in Orange County. As Wilson describes,"Our ethos is about community. That's what we’re trying to do with our farmers and food. We're attempting to create food that reflects our conversations with our farmers, with a tight-knit kitchen crew that makes simple food for regular customers that become a larger part of the PoP family. That's what this place is all about. Family."
1What's up with the funny name?
As Yasha likes to say, "It's a funny name for serious coffee lovers." As the story goes, Yasha was making a midnight supermarket run for milk for Anya, who needed her coffee with milk first thing in the morning. Bleary-eyed, he was paying at the register when the cashier was bagging his purchases and asked him, "Paper or plastic" This struck a nerve and he said aloud, "What a great name for a coffee shop." And it was then he decided to open the cafe.
2What are your service hours?
Breakfast from 7am-2pm, Lunch 11am-4pm, and Dinner 4-10pm daily. A seasonal selection of baked goods is available on the market bar at all time.
3What's the deal with Laptop-Free Tables & Laptop-Free Weekends?
On weekdays, we always have a number of tables reserved for “no laptops.” These are the tables at the front of the café by the entrance, on the north side of the pillar where our events are displayed. Most of our tables, however, are cool for laptop use: specifically all the tables in the back of the cafe, out on the patios, up on the mezzanine, and all the bar seats. If you are uncertain where to sit with your laptop, please ask a barista or check out the signs on the tables. Weekends at Paper or Plastik Cafe are laptop free. This policy is an attempt to make space for those folks who want to come in on the weekends to eat some brunch, see some friends, hear some music, meet new neighbors, or just watch the world go by.
There is 2-hour metered street parking both on Pico and Ogden, 2-hour non-metered neighborhood parking.
5Take-Out and Large Orders
We accept pre-orders via email for large orders over $100 with 48 hours notice. All pastry orders require a 72-hour notice. Orders that do not meet the minimum can be placed on the day of via phone. At least one hour is required for processing and preparing phone orders. Once an order is received via email, we will send you back a confirmation with an approximate pick-up time. All orders are subject to a 10% service charge. We will have a separate catering menu available soon.
